In a game with a few player, the confronts appear in the Gamenews, but how to know that in game with 40 players or so?

Message your neighbors, make pacts (NAP's). You can even keep open communications with your enemies. The game news is still very helpful also the rankings will indicate players progress. Go to scorboard/rankings then find your game to see all forty players. Or games/campaigns then your game then your game's scorboard.

the thing is... i want to attack someone, but don't want to end up by gangbanging someone without me knowing it.

should i start attacking someone and let him say, "oh i'm already in the middle of a war"...

Read the game news, if the player is shown fighting someone then it is a good bet he is in a war. If the player isn't shown then he probably isn't in a war.

Also you could always position your troops and then ask.
