Eh...hate to tell you this, but campaigns can be played with about 15 minutes a day. Battles take up to and in excess of an hour. It is the pure campaigners who can take the "I have a life" stance.

Because campaigns make us feel like we have a life too
filled with conquering and building empires that we wouldn't ever be able to do even if we lived during the times it was done (that is most of us wouldn't).

Right. Like you said, 24 hour games are available. So obviously, if you have a busy social schedule, you play 24 hour games. Glad we agreed on that. So you can play 24 hour turn games.

I didn't forget about the faster games...you were complaining that they took too much time, so I pointed out the presence of the 24 hour, 15-minute-a-day games.

If your internet access is irregular, that's one thing. But to say that anyone with a life doesn't have time for 15 minutes a day or even (gasp) 30 minutes a day is absurd. Especially when you go and say that, while you can't squeeze in 15 minutes a day, you have no problem sitting down for an hour or more to play a battle.

Many of us have "actual" lives, and yet we're still able to play this game. If you're really too busy for it, fine, but don't go around implying that we're all asocial nerds.

Mystic,
You don't go inactive for at least 6 turns...thus, at least 6 days in the 24 hour games. The length before you go inactive increases as the game goes along. If you go camping for longer than a week, you can usually find someone else not in the game with you to take your turns for you.
Cheers,
H.

At the lower levels, it's hardly critical if you miss a turn or two. And if you're not fighting anyone you can miss more (at any level) and be fine.

And Sage, I've heard the no-life argument before. I'm not talking about the polite "I don't have time for this right now," but the more brash, "I don't have time for this and anyone that does is a loser and has no life!"

I wouldn't worry about it, as I've found it's usually (1) poorly argued, and (2) at least partly self-reflective.

The original question was why do we love campaigns so much. Well, they are really different from battles for one thing, so we have two games we can play. They are multi-player games as well. It's very hard to get ten actual people to play a game in the flesh, much less 40. I always wanted to play big board games but it took too long and always got kicked or something and the pieces went flying!

Campaigns use different skills than battles, too. One has to manage one's resources carefully, assessing the current situation and extrapolating a strategy, different in every campaign.

There are two ranks for everybody and having both of them high is a worthy goal.

yeah but the campaigns take forever it seems and in the campaigns im in it seems only 2-3 ppl are active not even half way through and when that happens it seems pointless to play and it might be more interesting if there were team battles and campaigns and im not talking clan campaigns either

Beginner games are very bad. They have a bunch of inactive players and also don't give you any rank.

Get in a standatd game and you'll have more opponents who stick around. They do take a long time but you will learn soooooo much patience that way, it'll be good for you.

The lower levels in campaigns take forever as mentioned above and involve many inactives. Consider it a learning experience weeding out the incompetent players and those looking for quick thrills. Once you get to the 20-30+ campaign level you will find that there is fierce competition and the mid-range campaigns at 40-65 level are truly chaotic and interesting. Once you go beyond that, you'll find NO inactives and far more strategy...
Just stay and try, if you're still not addicted to WOL when you're campaign level is above 30, you'll have your money back...

Yes, that has pissed off many a new player. However, you did learn something and now you can apply those skills in a regular game.

I hope.

If you really enjoy a challenging strategy game and fighting with a great group of people, you will really find this rewarding Mystic. Just hang in there and do your best...try to learn as many of the "tricks" of the game as you can as you play, and your rank will be up there in no time.

It seems like only yesterday that I started playing!
Cheers,
H.
