I have played for a while now and I am doing alright in the simple level games, but I have some questions.
How do you get troops into the towers?
How do I build walls away from my castle. I can build outposts, but not walls.
I can't seem to 100% connect the updates and tech research to the different types of troops that can be made. I just try to research what seems to be right, and then notice different troops showing up for the barracks, but is there a way to get the system figured out...develop this, then this, then this and you can produce this troop. etc?
Thanks for any help on this.

zorg,
As far as moving troops into your towers, just click on the tower for the destination as you would any other move, be aware though that it will take some extra mp to get inside.

Building walls, of course will require the tech, and like building anything else, just click on the space where you want the wall and the build option will appear.

As far as learning the upgrade/tech requirements, study the online manual and experience will teach you what to purchase and when. Most players have their own preference and order of purchasing the upgrades/techs and of course each game may dictate a different order or need.

Problem is, sometimes you need to research tech X to be able to research tech Y which is required to do whatever you want to do. And tech Y is the only one mentioned in the manual for that specific function. Someone once mentioned that they had written down a "tech-tree". Smart thing to do, especially with some of the games going on for so long. You end up forgetting how to start a game properly.

The simple split for me is that there are two types of troops - ranged and melee. And for each, there are a set of techs. Also just take it as set that the better the label, the better the troop (advanced, expert, master)
And last of all for troops, I believe ballista, if you're after them, are under 'seige machines' somewhere.

As for working thorugh the tech tree, whenever you buy/build something, take a look to see what's new that has become available. Works for me...!

It seems to me that there is a misconception that the online manual answers all questions. I have read it and it does not answer much beyond the basic. A tech tree would certainly make it easier for new players to feel confident in the game-play and help the creation of strategy. Also, as stated it would help struction a very long game. If anybody has such a tech tree, I would love to get a copy of it. Please send it along and accept my thanks.

No such luck, I was screaming for one when this system came out and I was told it was an un-necessary luxury...
The online manual probably does tell all, but the way it is set out is little help if you use it as anything more than a fact-finder i.e. as a straight-off guide to playing.

For a better way of putting it...most of us know about the Civilization games. Now imagine you know nothing about the latest one of these games, and I try to explain it to you. I tell you all about food, resources, how to get points, how to win battles, how to play well...and to me, it's all perfect sense - because I already know it. But to the other guy, it makes no sense and because he didn't have a clue to start with the bits of knowledge don't chain together, either.

I guess, for those who REALLY need help, we need a crash course. Click this, do that - now you have your first troops. Later, do this, that and then click there - you've taken over the buildings around you.

The tech tree is one of those things. For reference, it's very nice. For starting from scratch, those tables are little help at all.

*thoughtful mode over! :-)*

CTD, it is like you read my mind (you didn't did you?!!)
I think I am understanding what is going on, but it is hard to try to create my own tech tree when the turns are 12 hours apart. I am lucky if I remember what I did last turn, let alone, what tech I did three turns ago and how that changed what I can do.
The online manual helps a little, but not a lot on this.

No mind reading this time :-)
You are about to see some fun.

I've not played a campaign game in at least a couple of months. And now I have to re-learn how to start, in amongst the strongest players the game has ever seen!

So really, I'm actually doing what I describe...

Well there isnt just ranged and melee troops, how about seige troops? You really dont need those unless your in high level games where walls are used excessively, but its a must as you get better.

I got bored at work a few days ago and came up with an excel spreadsheet of all of the techs/buildings.

I tried to put it into some sort of order, but you decide how well I did.

An html version of it can be found at:
www.logickal.net/wol

I haven't added costs or descriptions yet (and I may or may not, eventually) so you'll still have to look up each one to see what it does.

Hehe, severly bored at work (actually... I just can't get into it today...) so I'm currently adding costs and revamping the tree a lot.

I should have a newer one posted in a little bit.

That is what we needed!!! It is great, you should get a free silver or gold membership for that work, esp if you are adding costs and such!

Ok, the new one with costs is up. Not quite as nice looking a tree, but it should be more informative.

The old one is still available, however.

I'm going to make a new thread to let people know where they can find it.
