With the recent reduction in thier prowess, most players have likely had a fair bit of time to test and adjust to the new role ranged troops have.

Leave your opnions here -
Are you better or worse off because of the changes?
How do you use ranged troops, strategicly?
Do you even think ranged troops are worth using anymore?

im only playing one game ATM, and an opponent im fighting currently is using ballistas while i (ATM) use only melee forces.

i must say that the stack of ballistas he uses is still pretty effective, especially to take out small stacks of scouts that i use as forward observers.
but ballistas also seem to be still an effective fighting force aganst larger melee units.

i dont think that they are useless, but we will see.

I see, the problem I am having is that with one of my games, using stacks of around 40 Marksmen, the damage I'm making seems kind of insignificant.

Well ive played several battles now against differnt stlyes. And yes ranged units are still very effective. If used in the right porportions I just faced an army of almost all marks and was almost destroyed. If it hadnt been for my 2 marks in there stolen towers I would have been creamed( for those who think commanders have no place on the battlefield wait till I steal ur towers ) It was a big change none the less but id have to say I know use more troops and more stratgy than before

You don't really need commandeers to take over buildings anymore...

But if you have the points leftover then the bonus is always nice.

And I agree that the battle games have been made more fun ever since the change.

But, as far as campaigns go...I think most of us will just have to find new ways to win.

Ice,you need comms to 'steal' towers.
Melee can only takeover unknown buildings.

What about Ranged troops in Campaigns?

Are they worth setting a barracks to train? Or would you rather train some melee unit instead?

Ranged units are still very valuable, just not over welming anymore. Against lower level units they are still just as deadly, I do feel that higher level units will counter very well.

well if they dont kill your commander in a battle game not only do you get the bonus but also if you are attacking aand push back there forces enough you get to use there towers very handy and if all else fails its a good retail taker I also think range will always have a place just not to the extent they were used in for one theres no better monster killers than ranged

im the one morbius is referring to
ranges are only effective if u can guarded them remember they would be the troop ull be able to hit and not get a hit back ur are doom if they are left unguarded so play with caution and make sure to use them wisely

The biggest change with the ranged seems to be that in a battle game, you need to attack. Before, with ranged troops the player who went on the offensive was in some trouble because the other players ranged troops would chew him up on his way to the battle. It seems now that to win a battle, you need to have good ground forces with ranged backup and you need to attack, there is no gain in sitting back and waiting.

But then, what do I know?

Actually, it's true. Sitting back and waiting usually gave you first proper strike, and thus a crucial advantage
