I couldnt seem to find anything on this topic within any of the online help/FAQ material.
How do i take over a castle of an inactive player? There is just large grey spot on the map with no walls, barracks, etc. I have my troops standing in the middle and i do not have a "take over" option available. I'm assuming this means that the castle is no longer available for take-over and i should just move on.

You need your commandeers to take over that castle. Also, the "take over" option may not be visible if your window isn't opened all the way.
Once you've done this, the gray spot is yours and so is the extra money and barracks slot (however walls, towers, etc. don't magically pop up).

you meen they arn't suppose to come back? I upgraded a gray slab's walls by accident and found stone walls where there weren't any before.
