Depends on who you are attacking and what you are attacking. Give a better scenario then I'll be able to tell you. More often than not I go with mace but have been known to break out falcs for a good matchup.

If both armies are melee Characters (AttackType 1-3), then the following 'rock-paper-scissors' type system outlines which army has the advantage and would win in an evenly size battle.
AttackType 1 beats AttackType 2 (eg. Swordsmen beat Spearmen)
AttackType 2 beats AttackType 3 (eg. Spearmen beat Scouts)
AttackType 3 beats AttackType 1 (eg. Scouts beat Swordsmen)
The winning type does 140% damage, while the losing type does 70% damage.

Techs Required :
Expert Melee
Special Abilities :
Defense : Unlimited defend attacks.
Falchioniers Troops/Turn : 18
Techs Required :
Expert Melee
Special Abilities :
Extra Damage : 50% chance of doing +50% Damage.
Falchs are faster, btw.

So the real answer is Byrons + Kings, look at what you need and deploy.

Gueritol, oh Geuritol, I was kind of joking, actually. I knew he wanted to know which is ultimately "better" which has no answer, it all depends on the situation, as mentioned above.
Still, if I had to choose an army of Mace or Falch, I would choose Macemen.
