| Posted : Tuesday, 19 April 2005 - 23:08 I think the hands of Pope Benedict XVI look very clean and he is even more conservative than Pope John Paul II. They were confidants (i.e. they shared each others views) So I suspect the Catholic Church will continue in the direction set by John Paul II ... hopefully able to reach some of those that he didn't reach for various reasons including that he was Polish and Pope Benedict XVI is German.
There may seem to be more dire current events in need of a Pope to help preserve world peace but the Cardinals were wise enough to realise that the Church itself needs much more of the work started by John Paul II to regain the faith, love and respect of many whose faith in the Church has been shaken.
I believe in miracles and I believe the missionary work of Christian Churches to feed the hungry, to shelter the cold and to care for the sick will eventually reach all peoples of the world and they will see that these brave people driven to do God's work are truly deserving of their faith, love and respect; but I also believe that only a strong united Christian Church can accomplish all that is necessary to achieve a long lasting world peace.
I must admit that it makes me feel good to hear our President say, "our hearts were touched by the sermon" (i.e. referring to the sermon of the new Holy Father at the funeral of John Paul II). "Long live the Pope."

Pope John Paul II was 58 when his papacy began, his predecessors were about the same age give or take.. Why would they choose a man who is almost 80 over the younger Bishops?

| Posted : Tuesday, 12 July 2005 - 14:30 The Pope is 78 to my knowledge and I have said this before that he speaks I believe 10 different languages which is a tremendous asset. Also the Catholic Church has been shaken by the pedophile scandals and this Pope is a no nonsense type who has already taken measures like putting a strick administrator in charge of the American Church who has gotten tough on American priests who may have been deviant. He has also made a tough stance on moral issues which Catholics believe underly destruction of the family as well as problems with deviant priests. Don't forget that these pedophile priests came from society into the Church.
Pope John Paul II was very loved and Pope Benedict XVI was very close to him sharing his values So that the strong Polish Catholic population has warmed to him and there is a strong movement to unify the Christian Church especially starting with closer ties with the Eastern Orthodox Christians who are very similar to Catholics except there was a rift where they did not recognize the Pope. The Catholic Church has even finally come out of the red financially this year.

PS:
Of course the votes are also put in a chalice and placed on the altar for God's blessing I believe before they are counted during the conclave where the Pope is chosen. So that the reasons I offer have been reasons I have read that the choice of Pope Benedict XVI WAS a good one and not that they ARE reasons why he was chosen.

| Posted : Thursday, 14 July 2005 - 05:33 I do hope there is a Heaven, although I don't believe in it. I think this pope definately deserves a good reward for his lifetime of servitude.. Just wish he didn't die in such a degraded fashion
