More than once I have come up short because I didn't know if I had 4 or 4.4 movement points...
FTR why movement points at all? Why not use action points for everything? That way a unit deep in the rear can 'force march' by using all its energy (i.e. action points) for movement, covering twice the normal distance but being useless until they rest for a bit...
Alternatively you could have three modes, attack defence and march, each cost action points to enter (like defence does now) but attack and defence consume more action points when moving (represents the effort required to maintain even basic formations) while 'march mode' allows rapid movement but cannot attack and attackers get one free melee attack due to the unit being 'out of formation'. |

| Posted : Tuesday, 24 May 2005 - 19:43 i like your suggestion, though i've suggested a "similar" thing in a thread about formations.
i really think that something should be changed. because it's almost impossible for a player, that had no time to develop it's technologies, due to warfare for example, to compete against a player who've had the fortune to grab lots or resources, plus time to develop units.
a player with scouts, swordman and spearman has almost no chance against pikemen, falc or squires (just to give an example). Assuming that the armies are balanced and both "generals" have equal hability.
I know that i'm exagerating a bit. BUT in "real" life, heavily armoured armies have been routed and destroyed by rather lighter armies if adequately ambushed while they were travelling (travel mode). Once again i refer to the Battle of the Trebia River by Hannibal.
If as MacWar stated, there WAS a travel mode (a form to press foward rappidly an inf army, with less sight radius + less attack/defense level), this could happen. Knights, Hvy Cavs, Mace, being slaughtered (ofcourse other things would continue to make a difference)by spearmen/swordman or scouts.
This is my opinion |

I saw your other post too, I liked the ambush idea, but ambushes historically happened only when one side is surprised and/or unprepared hence my suggestion at hiding/marching.
As for what lighter troops are capable of compared to heavy well trained troops, read about the rebellion in Britain during 60 to 61 AD. You will see two things, the destruction of the ninth Legion when it was surprised on the march by much lighter troops and the utter destruction of the Britians when confronted by two well prepared Legions of Rome. |

That way you could know for certain that there was enough MP without counting. As one moved the mouse after clicking the piece, there would be a readout near the piece showing how many movement points were going to be used and how many left over by any given move. Brilliant, eh? _________________________________________ Here's a list of the terrains and the decimal amount of move points needed for each:
Castle, Road 150% = .75 MP each hex. Grasslands, Light rough 90% = 1.11 Dead earth, Swamp, Snow 80% = 1.25 Rocky, Ice, Woodlands 70% = 1.43 Cursed earth, Thick swamp 60% = 1.66 Shallow water 20% = 5 Deep water 1% = 100 !

To Mac, the thing about my idea in formations would be precisely that, the form of ambushing troops (the heavier, the bigger the penaltie for example, knights DIDN'T cross europe to go to the crusades in Combat gear... ok quite a few did lol).
I know about the Bodicean revolt Read about a less know guy... Viriatus and his Lusitanian Wars against Rome. He did manage to destroy several Legions. | |
