NH; you need to build a military academy and a training guild in order to train higher level troops.
The 'military thing' in your castle are your two barracks. They only train troops.

NH try taking over a castle without commandeers. You can't do it. Also the commandeer bonus can make a major difference in a war, as long as your opponent doesn't kill them off.
