| Posted : Saturday, 9 July 2005 - 19:00 It is inevitable. There is nothing we can do to avoid it. It will happen to all of us sooner or later. At some point we will have to leave this world and leave all the material things we have accumulated in our lifetimes. These are undisputable facts.
It is an uneasy subject for most people to talk about, and many try to avoid thinking about it. Mostly because it is associated with pain and suffering, which are again things which we try to avoid. But if we do not think about something that is inevitable, that will happen sooner or later, then we can not prepare for it. And if we do not prepare for it, how will we meet that moment?
The three main religions of the world, Buddhism, Christianity and Islam, state in their teachings that there is life after death. If that is true, then is there anything we can do in this life that we can take to the next? If that is not true, can you imagine yourself not existing at all?

| Posted : Saturday, 9 July 2005 - 19:23 A very thoughtful subject boe.
My perspective as a Christian is that there is life after death. The things we do in this life...our thoughts, actions, beliefs, character, relationships...not gain of material things...are all things we do take with us. They are all parts that make up our spirit or soul.
Many of the events that happen in our lives are tests and tasks from God that build our character for His ultimate purposes here and in Heaven. Everything that happens is a blessing from God in some way...the very fact that we are alive and here is due to His plan. Our task is to do whatever is best for His Will to be done and not live a selfish (and thus transitory) life.
I can certainly imagine myself not existing, but I am not concerned about that eventuality. All the best, H. |

| Posted : Sunday, 10 July 2005 - 07:17 NH: I would rather have the mentality of being aware of the inevitable.
I whole heartedly agree with boe. Someday everyone will die. My question for you NH is this. If you try to ignor your fate of dying, how can you appreciate or comprehend the blessing of life?
Annalogy time! You have an apple. ( I like apples ) Its a bright pretty apple. Sometime soon its going to decompose like all apples do. You chose to ignor it because you dont want to think about the fact that someday your apple is not going to taste as wonderful as it will right now if you ate it. You dont eat it though. You are in denial. You look at your apple in a few days and its gone bad. You missed your chance to appreciate your apple becuase you didnt want to think about the fact that it would get icky. Wouldnt it have been better to have eaten the apple when it was in its prime so that you could fully appreciate it?... I think that the apple is kinda like life.. Take it while you can and be aware that someday it wont be as good or be there at all. If you realize this fact, then maybe you ll do all the things that you can in life.
Kinda weird way to compare but... I like apples and am hungry right now.

| Posted : Sunday, 10 July 2005 - 08:39 Well, if we didn't die, we would just get older. Our bodies would just cease to work at some point. Our joints would eventually get arthritis to the point we cant move, our spine would collaps leaving us paralized. The heart would pump so slow that we could not even be cognant. We would be alive and just be able to lie there, rotting flesh, urinating on ourselves, unable to speak, eat or interact with our friends, if we even had any.
So Boe, if I said, I hope you die, I guess that would be a positive thing? | | mimic Joined 14/10/2001 Posts : 979

| Posted : Sunday, 10 July 2005 - 20:04 BA, I assume any key to immortality would revolve around a cure to aging. | | BigAmigo Joined 15/10/2001 Posts : 3310

| Posted : Sunday, 10 July 2005 - 22:23 I assume that because to make somebody immortal, you'd have to make it so they couldn't die of old age. The way to do that would be to stop aging. As long as there's aging, bodies will deterioriate and then you won't be able to keep them alive, since they'll eventually deteriorate to the point where they're useless. | | Ghengis Khan Joined 24/03/2003 Posts : 828
| Posted : Monday, 11 July 2005 - 00:08 Well if you follow most religous teachings we are all imortal! It is just this shell that we currently use that isn't.
So on that note there is nothing wrong with death. Actually we should all just strap on bombs and go some place and blow other people up. Then we wouldn't have to worry about this mundane life anymore and could get on with that great after life.
(please note for those of you who seem to have a hard time realizing it, that was sarcasm)

| Posted : Monday, 11 July 2005 - 02:36 The body is just another piece of machinery that that sooner or later wears out. Some machines came defect already off the production line and wear out sooner. However there is no charge for getting a body replaced after the old one has worn out (I hope). Its just like when you need a new car only cheaper The good thing with a new body is that noone will know you and you may move to places you didnt see before Or maybe you cant choose place? Might be some kind of lottery come to think of it Else there wouldnt be so many living in the poor countries of the world. | | Mog Joined 5/02/2004 Posts : 2663
