that's a strategy or tactic or however it's termed.
Just because you encounterred the unexpected against your normally devastating assault of squires, falchs and mace or however you managed to accumulate your awesome scores doesn't mean the other guy's doing something unethical.
Adjust man, know your enemy and conform to the necessary counter measures ...
admittedly off hand, I can't think of any, except hordes of 5 pop spearmen maybe with your regular armies held in reserve to strike when a path is cleared ...
start building MAs Lod, on the field if necessary and start deploying 5 pop spearmen.

My assault on Crazy Li may have been restarted just in time ...
just got that all will disappear in 5 turns.
