I find that 3 scouts 1 comm it's very good to start.
But a good deal of players are adding a rock troop to attack those scissors...
But since you have in one barrack scouts and comms. and the other only scouts, you get one "quick" new troop after turn one, which can be rock type, or paper if you see one of those advancing spears...

join with scouts/comms, scouts/comms. change to scouts/scouts, scouts/scouts imediately. works best for me.

lately, i've done the 3 scouts and 1 spear. but, may go only scouts to get to the piles quickly. the added bonus is when you want you can train comms immediately or ballistas once you upgrade. if you go spear, scouts, comms, swords you may be too diversified...but, sometimes that may not be too bad. cheers.

I agree that two commanders isn't enough. Also, if you don't make one of your four commanders, then you have to use one turn learning how to produce commanders!
I tried the all scouts once, but then it makes some resources hard to take since the paper-rock-scissors thing means that militia or spearmen would attack a certain bandit best.
I use one of each now. It allows for total control of all area resources before I can tech-up for archers to clear out the bandits, and in the end, they are just pawns as I don't turn out many other troops until I get my knights, marks and cavs.
(this only fails in a game where someone comes at me in the first few rounds, then I have to battle old-school)

pinafore> i was doing just the same before the other 2 comms was added.. Now would be too many comms.
I'm sure you liked that because that way you get 18 extra troops per barrack (to compensate the lost of 2_free_troops_training bonus i guess).
Have you noticed that?

I did my usual scout/scout and comm/comm in game 13. Then the map came up. I need scout/scout and scout/comm. Going to regret not producing all scouts the first two turns.

But I have only been jumped it the begining of a game twice so I don't worry about it as I figure the odds are on my side. I'll keep thinking it till I get jumped in a coupla games in a row.

Four comms, two scouts.

Leave one Comm in your castle to build blacksmith, academy, and guild. Then get ur third barracks. That'll allow you to start dishing out troops fast enough to make up for not starting with more attackers. Send the other 3 comms out to get the near by resources.

correct me if I'm wrong, but on Turn0, can't your barracks learn a new troop type without taking a whole turn?

In that case, I'd go with Scout/Spear Scout/Sword. Then I have 2 Scouts, 2 Comms, 1 Spear, and 1 Sword to start. Then I learn Comms right away for when I need to train them.

Consider yourself corrected, as you can not learn new units one Turn 0. Actually, there is not much you <can> do during Turn 0 other than move.

That IS the only thing you can do. Other than twittle your thumbs waiting for others to join lol.

must have changed it, then. because I remember that at one time, you could learn a new troop to the barracks without costing a turn, but you had to do it at your first chance.
