I teach and I didn't say they were idiots I said they tested the lowest out of all college students. I also said many of the classes were a joke. I talk to other teachers everyday and many of them also agree.

BigAmigo: "You can talk about most anything, unless you mention Mog's name... er I mean the censor's name then he will post something opposing your using God's name.... er ... I mean the Moderator's name in vain (without his previous permission, I assume in writing) and then he will close the thread. "

I have no objection to having my name used if it isn't just an insult. You can address me directly or email me privately if you want.

I don't ever use your name when describing a "type", BA. I am not just a "type" either. You can debate my opinions, but you seem to go over the line sometimes into personal attacks. I just don't enjoy being mentioned that way and neither would you, I assume.

Being the Moderator here is a two-edged sword. I have the power to do a bunch of stuff but I have really barely done anything. I changed a curse word and I have asked people to stop posting those words in private messages. Really, there has been little in the forums that needs any kind of censorship. In general the folks here are well-behaved.

That being said, if someone feels as if they have been personally attacked for their beliefs or opinions, that is wrong. Debating the issue is right. It's hard to hold back from intemperate language, I know! I want to curse my brains out nearly every day in these forums. The two-edged sword, I have to hold myself to the highest standard here. Before I was Moderator, I may have said things I might not say now...but I doubt it.

Anyway, it isn't that you hurt my feelings, I just want to point out the rule that personal stuff has to be positive or neutral, one can't just insult people directly because you disagree with something they said.

And that's why BigAmigo and I have decided to move to Vermont and get married. I'm naming the child "America."

I understand Mog. I'd be pissed too if I were compared to Ted and John.

See your a closet Republican, you just need a little prodding. I love to prod.

Well, Finguld, as soon as I can confirm this for myself I'll be happy to share in the jests

Something about "education majors score the lowest on standardized tests" and "you'll fit right in" in the same post tweaked me a bit.

Mog
a while ago we had a discussion on morality and religion and we discussed the idea that some folks have the idea that they know right from wrong without the need for God or religion whereas those of us who do follow for example the Ten Commandments may also agree that all individuals are capable of learning right from wrong but we feel that just like any other book of knowledge the Bible is intended to give us a head start to avoid having to learn by trial and error.

One of the commandments of God is "thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor" and most religions teach that an attack against our religion can be considered as if it were a personal attack but I'm not trying to make an argument out of that.
This has nothing to do now with moderation and I know I can't win this argument but as long as anything can be said about my religion I'm going to have my say at defending it.

Am I to understand that anything at all can be said about any topic that is mentioned as long as we don't say anything obscene or make a personal attack?
Please think about that because I think there are anti-defamation groups that can get ruffled as well as parents over obscenities.

PS:
The way I understand it is that we were only expected to retain about 5% of all we learned in school. Of course some kids retain more but basicly the purpose of school is to develop good study and work habits and then one of the first things you learn in college is that there is a book on just about every topic so you don't have to remember everything ... you just have to remember how to look it up.

*(edit)*
I may be wrong about the 5%. Maybe it was 15% ... it's a long time since one of my high school teachers confided that to me. Maybe Finguld knows.
I'll ask my sister if she knows when I see her.

PPS:
I'm not trying to insinuate anything but this is something I just remembered to say. As Finguld has mentioned it has been considered I believe that Catholic schools do save us money simply by providing enough alternative sources of education (i.e. schools) to make an impact on the school age population and our public school system is not without other problems. There were race riots for example at the city high school near my suburban municipality and I even have a female cousin who had a nervous breakdown because she was literally chased up a fence.

Then there are the more recent wave of kids bringing guns to schools which I guess seems to be in areas where people tend more to own guns although I do remember when I was a kid some kids from a different neighborhood using a pair of pliers. Anyway I don't know the yearly cost to send a kid to Parochial school, but I'm sure it is over $2000/year and even maybe over $3000/year or even more paid by the parents of these kids;
So I don't think it is uncommon for non-Catholics to send there kids to Parochial schools just to get their kids away from the problems associated with public schools today
as a matter of fact.

Here's a handy guide to the differences between liberals and conservatives:

liberals are sodomites

conservatives are adulterers

TR, defend your religion all you like! No matter what anyone says, that isn't a personal attack, however, it is fair game to critisize religions.

I happen to agree with all of the ten commandments except "Thou shalt have no God before me" or however it goes. When you think about it, that implies there are other Gods one could worship, which is a bit weird if Jehovah is the only God, isn't it?

You could boil them all down to the Golden Rule, as far as I'm concerned, it covers everything.

There are many other gods we can and do worship in place of our one true Creator. Wealth, other people, possessions, science, the devil...the list is almost endless. Anything that we worship or seek more fervently than God is a violation of that commandment. There is nothing weird about God insisting on His due.

But, the Golden Rule applies here also. If you were God, wouldn't you want everyone to treat you as the sovereign lord of all creation. Then, treat Him that way...just as you would like to be treated.
Cheers,
H.

Mog
I know about the religion part but I would like you to clarify that anything can be said about ANY topic as long as we don't get obscene or personal because sometimes the best defence is a good offence like for example when I went up to the "Pearly Gates",
Senator Joe sent me back to Earth because he said, "No one over two hundred pounds admitted";
but I was only 5 pounds overweight so he gave me another chance.

As a matter of fact IMO I don't think even the definitions of the words sodomite and sodomy
are rated Group audience so I have removed them.
